大家好！我謹代表澳門大學全體師生員工，熱烈歡迎各位嘉賓蒞臨澳門大學35周年校慶啟動儀式，與大家一起見證和感受當中的喜悅。今年，我們將繼續以務實和節儉作為基本原則來安排全年的校慶活動，包括有今天的開放日和首屆澳門大學運動會，並且將在今後的九個多月裡舉辦多個大型學術盛會，邀請中外頂尖學者，與澳大和澳門師生、學者和市民就不同議題作學術交流，共創澳大與社區共融的學術氛圍，共慶澳大建校35年。

澳門大學成立於1981年，是由三名 華人黃景強博士、胡百熙博士和吳毓璘博士為教育 華人學子而創辦的澳門首間現代大學，由薛壽生教授出任創校校長。我們澳大人經過三十五年的奮鬥，已把澳大發展成為一所本地最具規模的綜合大學。2009年，澳大迎來新的發展里程，當年時任國家副主席習近平視察橫琴島，在訪問澳門期間宣佈中央決定開發橫琴島，新校園項目正式啟動。2013年新校園落成啟用，澳大有了更廣寬的空間實踐辦學理念。時間過得很快，五年前我們在舊校園慶祝「三十而立」的情景仍歷歷在目。轉眼間，五年過去了，大家再次齊聚一堂，正式在新校園裡舉辦首個校慶，迎接這個具有歷史意義的重要時刻。這實在有賴政府的支持，澳大歷任校監、校董和校長們的睿智領導，在大學發展過程的不同階段中做出決定性的貢獻，還有默默在各自崗位上為大學努力付出的師生員工、校友、以及各界社會賢達，澳門大學才能取得今天的成績。在此，我們要特別感謝三位創校人黃景強博士、胡百熙博士和吳毓璘博士；歷任校監高斯達先生、文禮治先生、韋奇立先生、何厚鏵先生，以及現任校監崔世安博士；歷任校董會主席何賢博士、何鴻燊博士、馬萬祺博士、韋奇立先生、何厚鏵先生、謝志偉博士，以及現任校董會主席林金城博士；歷任校長薛壽生教授、林達光教授、李天慶教授、費利納教授、周禮杲教授、姚偉彬教授，在他們的高瞻遠矚的指導和帶領下，令到澳門大學一步步成長，一步步創建更輝煌的成績。

澳大目前擁有七個學院、一個研究院、八所住宿式書院、數十個研究所和研究中心，在讀學生有近一萬人，畢業生共有二萬六千多人，當中更培育了不少本地社會中堅和領導人才。譬如說，歷屆校友中就有6人是現任特區政府立法會議員，2人擔任特區政府主要官員，有53人為特區政府局長或副局長級人員、另有22人擔任澳門社團領導要職；此外，近年新入職的本地司法官和律師大部分也是從澳大法學院畢業，成績有目共睹。

近年，澳門大學迎來不少的發展機遇，其整體發展取得了飛躍的進步，並屢創佳績，國際影響力正不斷提高。例如，澳大在2014/2015學年首次晉身英國《泰晤士高等教育》一百所全球年輕大學世界排名榜中的第39位，以及躋身世界大學排名的前三百強；並在2015年首次晉身亞洲大學一百強排行榜中第40位。師資方面，澳大近年積極從全球招聘優秀師資，講座教授由2008年的1人增至2015年的22人。科研方面，澳大設立了健康科學學院和兩所國家重點實驗室，大學的高端科研論文發表量由2008年的126篇增至2015年的952篇，所取得的研究成果在國際上獲得廣泛的讚譽和認同。學生培養方面，澳大在新校園建設了亞洲最具規模和最完整的住宿式書院系統，以書院管理與學院教育相結合，並透過實踐「四位一體」的教育模式，全方位培育多元人才。以上成果不但是近年定下建立“世界一流”目標後不懈努力的成績，也充分展現了澳大軟硬實力的進步。我在此向為大學盡心盡力、服務多年的領導、老師、教職員、和校友致敬。

稍後在揭開35周年校慶的帷幕以後，我們還特別安排了植樹活動，寓意十年樹木，百年樹人，以栽種樹木比喻教育工作，期盼大學同仁今後一如既往地實踐澳大的教育使命。

為迎接未來的發展，我們在新校園裡啟動35周年校慶這個新的起點上，會繼續傳承澳大的歷史、煥發澳大人的精神──積極開拓創新，以立足澳門、心懷祖國、面向全球的心來發揮大學育人的使命，努力協助澳大達成為一流大學的目標，為澳門、國家以至世界培養更多優秀人才，不辜負澳門社會、特區政府及國家對我們的期望。謝謝！

Good morning! On behalf of the faculty, students and staff of the University of Macau (UM), I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you who are here to attend today’s opening ceremony for celebrations of the 35th anniversary of our university. Thank you for joining us in celebrating this joyous occasion.

This year, we continue to follow the principle of ‘Less is more’ by celebrating the 35th anniversary in a frugal yet meaningful way. In addition to the opening ceremony, the UM Open Day and the First UM Sports Day will also be held today. Over the next nine months, we will organise a series of academic events as part of the celebration. We will invite leading scholars from both at home and abroad to give open lectures on subjects within their areas of expertise. We hope that by creating opportunities for academic conversations between the local community and leading scholars from various fields, we will be able to foster a good academic ambience in Macao.

UM was founded in 1981, by three Chinese, Dr Wong King Keung, Dr Woo Pak Hay, and Dr Eng Yuk Lun. It was the first modern university in Macao, with Prof Hsueh Shou Sheng serving as the founding rector. The three co-founders had a clear goal in mind when they founded the university: to provide quality education for Chinese students. I think the three co-founders would be very pleased to see their goal accomplished—with the joint efforts of all UM members over the past 35 years, UM has now become a leading comprehensive university in Macao that provides quality education not only for Chinese students, but for students from around the world. The year 2009 was an important milestone in the university’s history. Then Vice President Xi Jinping inspected Hengqin Island, and during his visit to Macao Xi announced the central government’s decision to develop Hengqin Island, paving the way for the new campus project. In 2013, the new campus was completed and became operational. How time flies! I still remember vividly how we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the university on the old campus five years ago. And now, here we are, celebrating the university’s 35th anniversary on the new campus together. Today is a momentous day because it’s the first time that the university’s anniversary has been celebrated on the new campus. The progress UM has made over the past 35 years would not have been possible without the great support of the government; the wise leadership of former and current chancellors, University Council members, and rectors, who have made a decisive contribution in the different phases of the university’s development; as well as the joint efforts of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and prominent members of the community. The people who deserve our gratitude are too numerous to name here. But the following individuals deserve our special thanks. They are the three co-founders: Dr Wong King Keung, Dr Woo Pak Hay, and Dr Eng Yuk Lun; former university chancellors, Mr Vasco Leíte de Almeida e Costa, Mr Carlos Montez Melancia, Mr Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira, and Mr Edmund Ho Hau-wah; the current chancellor, Dr Chui Sai On; former University Council chairs, Dr Ho Yin, Dr Stanley Ho Hung Sun, Dr Ma Man Kei, Mr Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira, Mr Edmund Ho Hau-wah, and Dr Tse Chi Wai; the current University Council chair, Dr Lam Kam Seng; and former rectors, Prof Hsueh Shou Sheng, Prof Lin Ta-Kuang, Prof Li Tianqing, Prof Mario Nascimento Ferreira, Prof Zhou Ligao, and Prof Iu Vai Pan. Under the visionary leadership of these individuals, UM has grown steadily over the years, poised to scale new heights in the future.

Currently we have seven faculties, one institute, eight residential colleges, and dozens of research institutes and centres. We have nearly 10,000 current students and we have graduated more than 26,000 students over the years. Many of our graduates have become leaders in various fields of the Macao society. For example, of the current Legislative Assembly members, 6 are UM graduates. Of the key officials in the local government, 2 are from UM. 53 UM graduates are now holding positions at the level of director or deputy director in the local government. 22 are serving in management positions in the various local organisations. Also, most of the judicial officers and attorneys installed in recent years are graduates from our Faculty of Law. I think these figures speak for themselves.

UM has been blessed with numerous opportunities in recent years, and as a result the university has progressed in leaps and bounds, gaining increasing recognition at the international level. For example, in the 2014/2015 academic year, UM was ranked No 39 in the Times Higher Education100 Under 50 Universities Rankings. It was the first time UM was ranked among the world’s 100 best young universities. UM was also ranked among the world’s top 300 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In 2015, UM was ranked No 40 in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. It was the first time UM was ranked among the top 100 Asian universities. On the faculty front, UM vigorously recruits outstanding scholars from around the world. The number of our chair professors rose from 1 in 2008 to 22 in 2015. In the area of research, UM has established a new faculty, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and two state key laboratories; the number of research papers by our faculty members published in prestigious journals increased from 126 in 2008 to 949 in 2015, which is testament to the widespread recognition of our research achievements. In terms of quality education, UM now has the largest residential college system in Asia. The combination of faculties and residential colleges allows us to provide a multifaceted education to our students through a ‘4-in-1’ model. These achievements are the result of UM members’ joint efforts towards the goal of building a first-rate university. They are also testament to the improved soft power and hard power of the university. I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to everyone who has contributed to the university’s development with their loyal and dedicated service.

Later we will have a tree planting ceremony. There is a Chinese saying that goes, ‘It takes ten years to nurture a tree, but it takes a hundred years to nurture a generation of talented people.’ The tree planting ceremony conveys our hope that all the colleagues at UM will continue to work closely to contribute to the university’s mission.

The 35th anniversary represents a new beginning for our university. Building on our rich legacy and a spirit of innovation, we will motivate ourselves with the government’s high expectations, continue to work towards the goal of building a first-rate university, and produce more outstanding graduates to serve Macao, China, and beyond.

　　首先，我僅代表澳門大學校董會對各位出席我校三十五週年校慶晚宴，表示熱烈的歡迎！

今年是澳大建校三十五周年的喜慶日子。澳大一直秉承“仁、義、禮、知、信”的校訓精神，努力開拓進取。在一代又一代澳大人的艱苦奮鬥下，我校已成為亞洲地區具有一定影響力的綜合性大學。澳大校友亦在社會的各行各業，貢獻著自己的力量。

在此，我僅代表大學，對於澳大各位先賢前輩，以及現時我校同仁的貢獻，表示誠摯的謝意！與此同時，我亦對澳門特區政府以及社會各界對澳大長期以來的支持和鼓勵，表示衷心的感謝！

在國家先行先試政策以及中央政府、國家相關部委、廣東省政府的大力支持下，澳門大學在橫琴建立起新校園，並以澳門特區的法律實施管轄。

可以說，澳大是制度創新的最大獲益者。2014年8月新校園正式投入運作，優美的校園環境和全新的設施為澳大的全面發展提供了新的機遇，也令澳大展開了新的教育篇章。

在近年，澳大無論在教學、科研，還是在社會服務和國際化方面都取得了長足的發展。“四位一體”全新教育模式的實踐，更有力地提升了學生素質和競爭力。

作為澳門的公立大學，我們時刻謹記“為澳門培養人才、推動澳門社會發展”為己任。

在未來的日子，澳大同仁必定堅定信心，積極進取，持續提升教研水平，優化科研環境，強化社會服務，回應社會對高等教育發展的要求。為祖國、為澳門培養更多德才兼備的人才，為澳門可持續發展作出新的貢獻。

藉此機會，本人代表校董會向由校長帶領的管理團隊和全校工作人員，表示最誠摯的感謝。

First of all, on behalf of the University Council, I would like to welcome you to today’s gala dinner in celebration of the 35th anniversary of our University!

This year marks the 35th anniversary of our University. Guided by the university motto, ‘humanity, integrity, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity’, UM members have worked hard over the past 35 years to develop UM into an influential comprehensive university in Asia, with many alumni working in various industries as productive members of society.

On behalf of the University, I would like to thank all former and current colleagues for their contributions to the University. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Macao SAR government and all sectors of the community for their longstanding support and encouragement to our University.

With the great support of the Central Government and Guangdong Government, we successfully built a new campus on Hengqin Island, and manage it according to the legal system of Macao SAR.

We can say that UM is the biggest beneficiary of this innovative scheme. In August 2014, our new campus officially became operational. The beautiful campus environment and the brand-new facilities have brought new opportunities and ushered in a new chapter in the history of the University.

In recent years, UM has made significant progress in teaching, research, community service, as well as in the area of internationalisation. The new ‘4-in-1’ education model has helped raise the quality and competitiveness of our students.

As a public university, UM always remembers its mission to produce talents for Macao and promote the societal development of Macao.

In the future, I believe that our colleagues will continue to enhance the standard of teaching and research, improve the research environment, and strengthen community service, in order to meet society’s expectations for higher education, produce more outstanding graduates for our city and our country, and make new contributions to the sustainable development of Macao.

I would like to take this opportunity and on behalf of the University Council, to express my sincere thanks to the management team led by the Rector and all UM colleagues.

本著澳大的傳統，務實和節儉，今年全年的校慶活動安排得精彩繽紛，且頗具特色。這其中包括大學開放日、首屆澳門大學運動會，以及眾多大型學術盛會。我們邀請到中外頂尖學者，與澳大師生、澳門的學者，以及市民就不同議題作學術交流，與澳門社區攜手慶祝澳門大學建校35週年。

澳門回歸祖國以後，澳門和澳門大學迎來了飛速的發展。特區政府為我們重組了校董會，修了澳門大學的法律，特別在2009年，全國人民代表大會常務委員會批准澳大在橫琴島建設新校園。2013年，澳大新校園終於落成啟用。2014年，澳門大學整體遷入新校園。現在大樓林立的環境裡面，澳大迎來了絕佳的發展機會。但是只有大樓不行，我們澳大在過去幾年裡，還招攬了一大批大師，例如，楊義教授，他是中國文學方面的權威。兩個國家重點實驗室，在中藥和集成電路方面已經在亞洲甚至世界稱霸。所以，澳大現在有大樓也有大師。

大學要有大師，但我們澳大認為光有大師也不夠，光有大樓也不夠，我們有了大樓大師要培養學生。澳大經過仔細思考，我們定立了辦學目標，就是培養學生自知和自信，大家知道：「知人者智，自知者明。」大學教育應以人為本，積極承擔起激發學生潛能的特殊使命。而要想發揮潛能，必先培養他們的自知與自信力。與他人良性互動，為社會作出貢獻。

澳大為達到這個目的，專門設計「四位一體」教育模式，通過專業教育、通識教育、研習教育及社群教育，對學生進行多方位全天候的體驗式教育，這都是我們澳大獨一無二創造的，我們希望在這樣的教育體制下，我們努力讓學生不但擁有廣博的知識（大博），也會具有高潔的思維和儒雅的行為（大雅）。因此，我們澳大現在可以說是大，但大的不僅是我們有大樓，不謹是我們有大師，而是我們要培養學生大博大雅。

借此機會，我要感謝特區政府和澳門社區，給我們澳大提供這樣一個良好優秀的機會，讓我們可以認認真真做好教學工作。當我8年前來到澳門大學時，理想讓澳大培養出澳門特首，這是我們的歷史責任。我堅信我們在有了大師大樓的條件下，培養出具有大博大雅的學生一定可以引領澳門社會走向新的台階，為世界，為祖國做出奉獻。

展望未來，我們澳大人將繼續團結一致，開拓創新，不斷前進！我們將繼續以立足澳門、胸懷祖國、面向全球，更好地推動教學模式的創新，科研能力的提升，為澳門、為中國培養更多優秀的學子，為澳門創造高等教育更燦爛的明天！

Dear guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we are gathered here to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the University of Macau. I’d like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend today’s dinner and celebrate the joyous occasion with us. On behalf of all UM members, I’d like to extend my warmest welcome and most sincere gratitude to you. 

In keeping with our tradition, we planned our celebratory activities throughout the year in a pragmatic and frugal manner. They include the Open Day, the First UM Sports Day, and a series of large-scale academic events. We invited top scholars, both at home and abroad, to hold academic conversations with UM faculty and students, local scholars, and Macao residents, and we involved the local community in the celebration of the 35th anniversary of our university.

While celebrating this joyous occasion, we must not forget to pay tribute to the outstanding leaders of the university. UM was founded in 1981 by three visionary individuals whose names deserve to be forever remembered by all UM members. They are Dr Wong King Keung, Dr Woo Pak Hay, and Dr Eng Yuk Lun. Prof Hsueh Shou Sheng served as the founding rector. Under the visionary leadership of former University Council chairs, Dr Ho Yin, Dr Stanley Ho Hung Sun, Dr Ma Man Kei, Mr Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira, Mr Edmund Ho Hau-wah, and Dr Tse Chi Wai, and the current University Council Chair Dr Lam Kam Seng; as well as the leadership of former rectors Prof Hsueh Shou Sheng, Prof Lin Ta-Kuang, Prof Li Tianqing, Prof Mario Nascimento Ferreir, Prof Zhou Ligao, and Prof Iu Vai Pan, UM has developed into the largest flagship university in Macao. Please join me in giving a big round of applause to these outstanding leaders.

Since Macao’s return to the motherland, both Macao and UM have developed rapidly. The SAR government restructured the University Council and revised the Judicial Regime of the University of Macau. The year 2009 deserves special mention here. In 2009, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee adopted a bill that approved the construction of a new UM campus on Hengqin Island. In 2013, construction of the new campus was completed. In 2014, UM made complete relocation to the new campus. A well-equipped new campus brought an excellent opportunity for our university. But great buildings alone are not enough. Over the past few years, we have successfully recruited many scholars who are masters in their respective fields. For example, Prof Yang Yi is an authority in the field of Chinese literature. Our two state key laboratories, one in Chinese medicine, and the other in microelectronics, are now in a leading position in Asia and the world. So our university now has both great buildings and great professors.

Great professors and great buildings are important to a university, but we believe that great professors and great buildings alone are not enough. They are there to provide quality education for our students. After careful consideration, we established our educational goal, which is to help our students better understand themselves and build self-confidence. We’ve all heard of the saying, ‘It is the wise man who understands other people; it is the wiser man who understands himself.’ A university should carry out student-centred education to fulfil its special mission to unleash the students’ potential. But self-knowledge and self-confidence are a prerequisite for achieving full potential. We want our students to have the skills to interact with others and make a positive contribution to society.

To achieve this goal, UM implements a ‘4-in-1’ model of education that consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. Through this unique ‘4-in-1’ model, we hope to create a multifaceted experiential learning experience for our students and help them possess extensive knowledge (great knowledge) on the one hand, and a noble mind and elegant behaviour (great character) on the other. So, we can say that UM is now great, but its greatness doesn’t just lie in the great buildings and great professors; it also lies in our commitment to producing students with great knowledge and great character.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Macao SAR government and the local community for giving us such a wonderful opportunity. Eight years ago, when I first came to UM, I hoped that one day the chief executive of the Macao SAR would be a graduate of UM. This is our historical responsibility. I believe that great professors and great buildings will help us produce graduates with great knowledge and great character, graduates who can make a positive contribution to Macao, China, and the world. 

Looking to the future, I hope all UM members will continue to work together with a spirit of innovation and enterprise. We will continue to serve students from Macao, China, and the rest of the world. We will continue to promote the innovation of our pedagogical model, enhance our research capabilities, and produce more outstanding graduates for Macao and China. Together, we can create a better future!
