"I am a Photographer!"

by Angela Ip

With the low cost and advanced technology in camera equipment today, taking photos is easy. Taking good photos is a different story. Rather than impart technical skills of photo-taking, which the manual does well, I have compiled a list of useful tips for increasing your chances of ending up with beautiful photographs.

Tip 1: Observe
Living in such a fast-pace world, people easily ignore or overlook the beauty and details of things. Slow down, and study your surroundings carefully and in detail. Shadows may be more interesting than the subjects themselves.

Tip 2: Upgrade
Read up books about phototaking. Take courses on advanced photography skills. Visit photography exhibitions. Talk to other photographers to exchange ideas. Knowing what and how other photographers work help you develop your own style.

Tip 3: Practice
Many people think having a good camera can guarantee good photos. Actually, it is you behind the camera who can decide how to take good and beautiful pictures. Practice helps you improve.

Tip 4: Communicate
The best photographers are also effective communicators. They knew how to communicate with the person or object they film. Understanding your subject, be it a person or culture or place, helps you gain confidence of yourself and insight into its unique qualities. Then you find the most appropriate manner to compose the shot and to present your discoveries to your audience.

Tip 5: Share
Showing off your camera functions, skills or knowledge does not necessarily lead to a powerful picture. But sharing the beauty of your subject does.
