"We have nurtured education in Macau, contributed truly to the development of the society," Prof. Iu said. "Today we have signed cooperation agreements with over 100 universities in 27 countries," Prof. Iu explained. With the united effort of 25 years, UM is now an internationally recognized university, "including first rank universities like Cambridge University and Harvard University," Prof. Iu added.
"We should contribute to the society from which we were raised." Prof. Iu said UM was built in Macau and is of Macau. As a public university in Macau, "we should serve Macau." The ceremony at the Cultural Center ended with representatives giving their congratulation speeches to the University; and it was followed by the dedication and naming ceremony of the Choi Kai Yau Building in the public area of UM, which is the center of the campus. Refreshments were offered following the ceremony. Snacks like the Portuguese style egg tarts and orange juice were supplied. The public area in no time became a place for chatting and exchanging ideas. No sooner had the ceremony ended and the guests were leaving. Solemnity remained even when the public area was emptied. The silver jubilee ceremony on October 20, 2006 represents the successful growth of UM from a private university to an internationally recognized university. |
