Busy season for sports
By Anita Cheong

The field hockey and Wushu qualifying tournaments of the Ninth National Games came to a successful close two weeks ago. It is the first time that Macau has joined mainland cities to host some sports events of the National Games.

In the coming months, there will be more than 15 sports events and activities taking place in the city.

They include the Third World Men's Club Table Tennis Championships from May 31 to June 3, the Macau International Dragon Boat Races between June 17-25, the Final of the Macau Women's Volleyball World Grand Prix 2001 August 23-27, and the Men's Volleyball World Championship 2002 - Qualifying Tournament August 28-30. Participants will come from many countries including China, Brazil, Russia, and the United States.

Macau is planning to host as many as 20 international and national sports events this year to gain experience in organizing big sports games.

These sports events are part of preparatory efforts for the city to host the East Asian Games 2005, the largest sports competition in the region. More important than that, it is hoped that international sports events will help promote Macau and boost the local tourism industry.
