Tuition reduction welcomed
By Rosela Yip

Tuition fees for the degree programmes will be further reduced by 15 to 20 per cent in the next academic year 2001/2002.

Tuition Fees Scheme for the Academic Year 2001/2002
Bachelor Degree in Law Programme MOP15,600 (p.a.)
Bachelor Degree Programme in Education MOP21,000 (p.a.)
Others MOP24,800 (p.a.)
"Bacharelato" Degree Programme MOP21,000 (p.a.)

All the Bachelor and the Bacharelato Degree programmes will have the reduction except for Bachelor Degree in Law Programmes.

Tuition fees for the Law Programmes will have a 42 per cent increase and will be increased progressively until they are at the same level as the other Bachelor Degree programmes.

Paul Pang, head of Academic Affairs Bureau, explained that the reason for the reduction is that many parents and students find it a heavy burden to pay the tuition fees.

Janice Ip, a student of University of Macau (UMac) who needs to pay her tuition by herself, admitted that the reduction would really alleviate her burden.

Kelvin Cheong, another UMac student, wondered if the reduction in tuition fees will affect the quality of teaching and students' general welfare.

Pang stressed that the tuition cut would not lead to "any significant change in resource allocation as the reduction was planned well in advance."

He pointed out that the school has allocated a lot of funds to improve teaching resources, to provide scholarships and to set up more exchange programmes.  More student activities and competitions have been organized and there has been an obvious improvement in school facilities and general environment.
