Of all the courses I took at UM, 2 courses stick in my mind. They were so much fun. They taught me how to use chroma key and how to be a stand-upper. The use of chroma key involves many post-production techniques. The equipment we had at the time was not good enough to create the kind of special effects normally seen in movies but it was enough to teach students the theory behind the production and many post-production techniques. Learning how to be a stand-upper was a requirement for all students of communication. It was a good experience to receive this training at the university whether or not we chose to work as a journalist after graduation.
The most important aspect of filmmaking is to sell your story to the investors and show them your creativity. This process requires the ability to organise, prioritise, and plan ahead. When I was studying at UM, there was no film department and no courses in filmmaking taught by professional filmmakers. We didn’t learn much about what is a film shot. But we did learn how to plan ahead, do public speaking and set goals. One course I’d recommend to everyone is public speaking. It teaches you how to overcome your fear of public speaking and how to organise your thoughts under time pressure. I find this skill very useful.
