The Faculty of Education (FED) of the University of Macau (UM) held an orientation for the 2024/2025 intake of the Doctor of Education (EdD) programme. This year, the programme has admitted 32 elite students, including personnel from educational institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Zhejiang, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In his speech, UM Rector Yonghua Song said that UM has made significant achievements in diversification and internationalisation in recent years. With its first-class research teams and growing international influence, UM is on its way to becoming an internationally recognised university of excellence. He expressed hope that the new students will maintain strong convictions and embrace the opportunities for exploration in their academic journeys, so as to fulfil their academic aspirations at UM and contribute to both national and global educational development through educational practices.

Fan Lianghuo, dean of FED, said that the EdD programme aims to nurture educational leaders with a global perspective and innovative capabilities. He encouraged the new cohort to actively explore educational concepts from different cultures, integrate Eastern and Western insights, and promote the continuous advancement of education. In addition, Zhou Yisu, director of the EdD programme, introduced the programme curriculum and requirements. He emphasised the importance for students to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical application over the next three years to enhance their professional skills progressively.

During the sharing session at the orientation, Gong Yang, programme coordinator of the Bachelor of Education programme (Chinese) of FED, advised the new cohort to integrate their own educational experiences into their research. He also encouraged them to maintain frequent communication with their supervisors and peers, and focus on research areas that interest them. Yang Fan and Lam Hoi Ian, second-year students in the EdD programme, shared their learning experiences and encouraged the new students to take full advantage of UM’s abundant resources, as well as to maintain curiosity and critical thinking. They also advised the new students to set both short-term and long-term goals and actively engage in academic discussions.

The UM EdD programme is a professionally-oriented and advanced programme that integrates cutting-edge research and practical skills. It is designed for education professionals from various sectors who have management experience. The programme addresses aspects of higher education, non-tertiary education, education enterprises, as well as management and development of non-profit educational organisations and government agencies.
