Starting from 3 May, the University of Macau (UM) will be accepting applications from mainland students of 31 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions for its undergraduate programmes. Eligible students can apply at UM’s official website. The deadline for applications is 26 June. With the approval of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the admission of mainland students to the university will be an independent process instead of being part of the National Unified Admission Scheme for Universities. The application to UM will not take up places for admission offered by mainland universities.
Applicants must achieve the admission marks of tier-one universities in the 2022 National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), or the admission marks for special categories, with 110 marks or above in the English subject. Admission will be based on the applicants’ NCEE results and the admission quotas for different programmes, in accordance with the applicants’ order of preference in major selection. Applicants with outstanding NCEE results will have the opportunity to receive a full scholarship (with tuition and accommodation fee waived) or a MOP30,000 annual scholarship from the Macao Foundation. In addition, UM offers special scholarships for students from the Greater Bay Area, and a preferential ‘bonus marks’ policy for students from Beijing, Guangdong province, Zhuhai, and Hengqin.
UM is an international public comprehensive university in Macao, with over 12,500 students, 7,300 of whom are undergraduates. The university has a unique advantage of different cultures coexisting together and implements a modern international governance model, with English as the main medium of instruction. The university recruits faculty members globally, with 80 per cent of them coming from outside Macao. UM also established a residential college system to facilitate the implementation of whole person education and the university’s ‘4-in-1’ model of education, which is unique among higher education institutions in Macao.
UM is ranked in the 201-250 bracket in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with a global ranking of No 5 in International Outlook, No 38 in the THE Asia University Rankings, and No 26 in the THE Young University Rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, it is ranked No 322. In the Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) rankings, it is among the top 1 per cent in ten subjects, namely Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Clinical Medicine, Psychiatry/Psychology, Biology & Biochemistry, Social Sciences, General, and Agricultural Science. On the research front, with the approval of the central government, the university has established three state key laboratories, focused on Chinese medicine quality research, analogue and mixed-signal very-large-scale integrated circuits, and internet of things for smart cities, respectively. The university received the second-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award for its chip design technology. The number of papers accepted by the International Solid-State Circuits Conference 2019 also ranks the university second in the world in chip research, next only to Intel. Chinese medicine is another distinctive research field at UM. Faculty members in this field are dedicated to Chinese medicine quality research and the development of international standards, and have won numerous awards at local, national, and international levels, including several second prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award, gold awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, and more than 40 special science and technology awards in Macao.
In recent years, UM has been expanding its global partnership network and has launched dual or joint degree programmes, including joint post-doctoral programmes, with many of the world’s leading universities, including Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Toronto, the University of Porto, the University of Lisbon, the University of Coimbra, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, and the South China University of Technology. The university has also established collaboration agreements with more than 250 institutions of higher learning in over 30 countries and regions.
UM also admits non-NCEE mainland students who are currently enrolled in international programmes or holding results of international public examinations. The applicants must be high school students graduating this year. Eligible students can apply at UM’s official website between 11 May and 24 May.
