The University of Macau (UM) today (12 July) held a lecture titled ‘Is China Becoming the World’s Next Financial Superpower?’, as part of the University Lecture Series in celebration of the 40th anniversary. Ben Shenglin, dean of the International Business School and dean of the Academy of Internet Finance, Zhejiang University, was the keynote speaker. The talk attracted many UM faculty members and students, representatives of the government, finance professionals, and members of the general public.
According to UM Vice Rector Michael Hui, Ben is renowned in various fields, including FinTech, entrepreneurial finance, international finance, and international business. His visit to UM as a member of Zhejiang University has led to the implementation of a series of collaborative projects between the two universities, including the establishment of a joint research centre for smart governance and a joint research centre for financial innovation. This will help to enhance the academic and research strengths of both institutions, as well as the financial development of Macao.
During the talk, Ben shared his insights on whether China would become the world’s next financial superpower and analysed this topic from four angles, namely the defining characteristics of financial superpowers, the advancement in the Chinese financial sector, financial reforms fostered by technology, and opportunities in mainland China and Macao.
