On the eve of the Chinese New Year (11 February), University of Macau (UM) Rector Yonghua Song and members of the university’s management team, including vice rectors and heads of various units, visited the ten residential colleges (RC), Postgraduate House, as well as restaurants and retail shops on campus, to send festive greetings to students and faculty members who will spend the Chinese New Year (CNY) at UM. They also visited employees of contract companies who will be working on campus throughout the CNY holiday.

Because of the epidemic, many UM students have chosen to spend the CNY at UM. For this reason, Rector Song and Vice Rectors Michael Hui, Rui Martins, Ge Wei, and Billy So, Dean of Student Paul Pang, Rector’s Office Director Wong Kei, Campus Management and Development Office Director Dick Lai and Communications Office Acting Director Albee Lei visited students in Chao Kuang Piu College, Cheng Yu Tung College, Cheong Kun Lun College, Choi Kai Yau College, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, Lui Che Woo College, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, Moon Chun Memorial College, Shiu Pong College, Stanley Ho East Asia College, and Postgraduate House. During the visit, the UM management team members presented lucky bags to students and wrote fai chun with the students.

According to Rector Song, he cannot spend the CNY Eve with his children in the United Kingdom this year, so he understands how the students feel, adding that the rector, vice rectors, and college masters will stay on campus to celebrate the CNY with the students. He also wished everyone happiness, good health, and academic progress in the new year.

Two students from Beijing, namely Li Jixuan and Ma Jingkun, have chosen to spend the CNY at UM. Although they cannot reunite with their family members back in their hometowns, they were happy to be able to organise activities for their classmates during the holiday and were warmed by the visit from the rector and vice rectors. Wang Shanshan, a master’s student from Yunnan provice, responded to the national call for epidemic prevention by staying on campus during the CNY holiday. She is very passionate about traditional Han clothing and plans to visit Macao’s attractions with her friends in Chinese clothing to promote this culture.

In order to let students experience the festive atmosphere and feel that RC can be a warm place like home, each college has put up different decorations and organised various activities for celebrating the CNY. In addition, to ensure that students and faculty members will have everything they need during the holiday, the university has made special arrangements. For example, most restaurants and retail shops will remain open during this period. Campus facilities like the library, UM Sports Complex, and Psychological Counselling Centre will also be open. Because of this, Rector Song and other members of UM’s management team also visited the University Mall to thank employees of contract companies for working during the CNY holiday and providing services for faculty members and students.
