The University of Macau (UM) has appointed Prof Michael Hui as its vice rector (academic affairs), following a rigorous global search process. A renowned marketing scholar and former pro-vice-chancellor/vice-president at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Prof Hui has garnered rich experience in teaching, research, and management.

As the only internationalised public comprehensive university in Macao, UM has in recent years made substantial academic progress and vigorously explored new disciplines. With my experience in teaching, research, and management, I very much look forward to bringing UM to new heights of academic excellence.’
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Prof Hui received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from CUHK in 1980. He obtained his CAAE (Certificat Approfondu d’Administration des Entreprises) from the University of Aix-Marseille, Aix-en-Provence in France in 1983 and a doctoral degree from London Business School in 1988. Before joining the Department of Marketing of CUHK in 1996, Prof Hui had held academic appointments in the UK and Canada. He has served in various senior positions at CUHK, including associate dean and BBA Programme director of the Faculty of Business Administration (1999-2002), associate pro-vice-chancellor (2004-2008), and pro-vice-chancellor/vice-president (2009-2017). Prior to joining UM, he was Choh-Ming Li Professor of Marketing and chairman of the Department of Marketing at CUHK.
Prof Hui’s main research interests include services marketing, cross-cultural consumption behaviours, and China business. He has received several teaching awards from CUHK, including the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Faculty of Business Administration, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award. He has also published extensively in international academic journals and serves on the editorial boards of many journals. With great dedication to public and community service, Prof Hui has served as the chairman of the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board, and a member of the Consumer Council in Hong Kong. He was awarded the Medal of Honour by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017.
