The Macao SAR government today (8 October) presented the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards. The University of Macau (UM) received ten prizes, accounting for more than half of the total number of prizes. 14 doctoral students and four master’s students from UM received the Postgraduate Science and Technology Research and Development Award.
This year, UM received 10 out of the 16 prizes, including two second prizes and three third prizes in the Natural Science Award category, three second prizes and one third prize in the Technological Invention Award category, as well as a third prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award category.
Wang Yitao, director of UM’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences and State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, received a special award. In his speech on behalf of the awardees, Wang said that Macao has experienced rapid development in science and technology since its return to the motherland, which not only has fueled social progress and economic growth of the city, but has also created opportunities for the moderate diversification of Macao’s economy and participation in China’s innovation-driven growth strategy.
The awards show recognition of the UM’s research capacity. The university will continue to nurture more professionals in science and technology, in order to promote the moderate diversification of Macao’s economy, and to contribute to China’s innovation-driven growth strategy and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
