The University of Macau (UM) is going to organize a series of academic events this month and in March. The events will bring together top scholars to Macao, thus providing a platform for academic exchanges between outstanding local scholars and their overseas counterparts. The series of academic events will include: the International Forum on University Governance; a Distinguished Talk by a Nobel laureate in economic sciences; the Doctor honoris causa Lecture Series; the Symposium on “12 Years of Breakthrough & Transformation of Macao” jointly organized by UM and the University of Toronto; and keynote speeches to be delivered at a forum in Singapore.

“The International Forum on University Governance: Keys to Competitiveness”, jointly organized by UM and the Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao, is going to be held from 21 to 22 February, at the Convention Hall of the Macao Science Center. The forum will invite government officials of higher education from Asia, Europe and North America; chairs, rectors, scholars and management of higher education institutions; government officials of the Macao SAR government; members of the Macao SAR Executive Council and Legislative Assembly; members of the UM Charter Revision Task Force; and representatives from education institutions in Macao. They will exchange opinions on such topics as university governance, autonomy, accountability, and strategic planning. The forum aims to help Macao better understand and cope with university-governance-related issues, and help UM find a suitable governance model that can enhance its competitiveness and better support its future development and the development of higher education in Macao.

“The Distinguished Seminar by Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences: The European Debt Dilemma and Its Impact on East Asia and the World Economy” by Prof. Robert A. Mundell, the father of the Euro, will be held at 10:00 am on 23 February, at the Cultural Centre of UM. Prof. Mundell was advisor to a number of international agencies and organizations including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, government departments in Canada, Latin America and Europe, as well as the Federal Reserve Board and the U.S. Treasury. He is one of the most important economists in the 20th century who has profoundly influenced international economic and political development.

Prof. Chia-Wei Woo, founding president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and recipient of an honorary doctorate from UM, will deliver a talk for the Doctor honoris causa Lecture: “Reminiscences on the Founding of HKUST: An Old Returnee’s Story” at 15:00 on 24 February at HG03 of the Ho Yin Convention Centre, UM. He will share his legendary experiences in founding HKUST, recruiting elite scholars for HKUST, and successfully turning HKUST into a world-class university within a short time.

“Conference on Culture and Identity in Times of Change – Sharing Our Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences” will be held at UM from 23 to 25 February. The conference will invite post-graduate students in the humanities and social sciences to discuss a wide range of topics, such as the latest movement in the humanities and social sciences, digital humanities, new media, literature, language, cultural identity, the international positioning of the Pan-Pearl River Delta region, as well as cross-cultural studies such as economics and culture in the Pan-Pearl River Delta region.

Furthermore, UM and the University of Toronto will jointly organize a symposium on the “12 Years of Breakthrough & Transformation of Macao” next month. UM Rector Wei Zhao will lead a delegation to Canada to join the symposium and exchange opinions with overseas participants. UM Vice Rectors Prof. Simon Ho and Dr. Alex Lai will attend the “Forum on 2nd Annual EduBuild Asia 2012” in Singapore. Keynote speeches on UM’s academic developments in recent years, as well as the opportunities and challenges brought about by UM’s new campus on Hengqin Island, will be delivered at the forum.
