In January 2012, the Graduate School of the University of Macau (UM) was officially accepted as an international Affiliate Member of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) based in the United States.

For more than four decades, CGS has been the national voice for the graduate dean community. CGS is the only national organization in the U.S. that is dedicated solely to the advancement of graduate education and research. CGS’ mission is to advance graduate education in order to ensure the vitality of intellectual discovery and to promote an environment that cultivates rigorous scholarship.

CGS draws its institutional membership from colleges and universities significantly engaged in graduate education, research, and scholarship culminating in the award of the master's or doctoral degree. Currently, CGS membership includes over five hundred universities in the U.S. and Canada, and sixteen universities outside North America. Collectively, CGS institutions annually award more than ninety-five percent of all U.S. doctorates and over seventy-eight percent of all U.S. master's degrees.
