The University of Macau (UM) hosted a seminar on mainland and Macao curriculum development and teaching materials compilation. The seminar was jointly organised by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the Institute of Curriculum and Textbook Research of the Ministry of Education of China, and supported by People’s Education Press, Guangdong Education Publishing House, and Macao Kai Yuen Publishing Limited. During the event, experts and scholars from mainland China and Macao in the field of curriculum and teaching materials, together with educators from Macao, discussed the successful experiences of curriculum reform and joint publication of teaching materials. An exhibition on teaching materials of the tertiary education institutions, secondary and primary schools in mainland China and Macao was held concurrently, where visitors could review the history and achievements of the development of teaching materials.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Jiayi, vice minister of education of China, presented 40,000 copies of the traditional Chinese version of the dictionary Xinbian Xuesheng Zidian to Macao primary school students and teachers. Ao Ieong U, secretary for social affairs and culture of the Macao SAR Government, presented to representatives of educational organisations in Macao the supplementary teaching materials on national security education compiled by the University of International Relations.

Vice Minister Wang also delivered a speech at the event. He stressed that basic education is an important component in building China into a leading country in education, and therefore it is of paramount importance to promote curriculum reform and the development of teaching materials in basic education. He also put forward some suggestions for future exchanges and cooperation between mainland China and Macao, and encouraged all parties to work together to cultivate talent who can meet the needs of the new era and to contribute to the Chinese modernisation.
