The University of Macau (UM) recently received certificates of honour for establishing lactation rooms to support breastfeeding and for hiring people with disabilities.

This year’s World Breastfeeding Week slogan is ‘Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding’, highlighting the importance of empowering both parents and creating a breastfeeding-friendly workplace, which are vital to the realisation of parents’ breastfeeding goals. UM has always been a supporter of breastfeeding. In 2016, it established two lactation rooms, located in Room 2008 in the Administration Building (N6) and Room 2025 in the Faculty of Business Administration building (N22), respectively. Equipped with sofas, end tables, refrigerators, and privacy screens, both lactation rooms provide a comfortable, private environment for nursing female employees to express and store breast milk. At an award ceremony for employers that provide a breastfeeding-friendly workplace, organised by the Health Bureau, UM received a certificate of honour for establishing lactation rooms that meet the relevant standards to support breastfeeding.

As a socially responsible institution, UM provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities. This year, it received a certificate of honour at an award ceremony for outstanding employers that hire people with disabilities, which was co-organised by the Labour Affairs Bureau and the Social Welfare Bureau, in recognition of its efforts in supporting people with disabilities to integrate into the workforce. This is the sixth year that UM has received a certificate of honour for hiring people with disabilities.
