University of Macau (UM) Librarian Wu Jianzhong recently received a commemorative medal for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The medal was jointly awarded by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council, and the Central Military Commission of the CPC.
As an important part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC, the commemorative medals are awarded to those who have won national awards. Wu was conferred the title of ‘Outstanding Individual’ by the State Council in 2010 in recognition of his contributions to the Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
Wu is the librarian of UM, vice president of the Council of the Library Society of China, and head of a committee for academic research. He is a former director of the Shanghai Library. Wu was born in 1956 in Shanghai and majored in Japanese studies in college. He obtained a master’s degree in library science from East China Normal University and was assigned to work in Shanghai Library after graduation. At age 29, he was appointed deputy director of Shanghai Library and worked in the position from 1988 to 1991. Later, Wu obtained a PhD degree from the University of Wales in the United Kingdom.
