The University of Macau (UM) Moon Chun Memorial College (MCMC) yesterday (25 November) received the Golden Award in the Leading by Example category at the award ceremony for the 2016 Business Awards of Macau held in Grand Lisboa. Recipients of the Excellence Award in the category include Sociedade de Jogos de Macau SA (SJM), Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel, and Melco Crown Entertainment Limited. Last year’s Business Awards of Macau Leadership Golden Award went to Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of Melco Crown.
Last night’s award ceremony completed the run of the business successes for MCMC in 2016. The college was the winner of the 2016 MECC (Macau European Chamber of Commerce) Euro-excellence Awards for Innovation; and, with the highest votes cast in its category, was a finalist in the 2016 Delta Creativity and Innovation Awards. ‘In the company of such stellar finalists, we are indeed privileged to share this enabling Business Awards of Macau platform,’ said Prof Kit Thompson, college master of MCMC.
In his acceptance speech, Prof Thompson quoted Steve Jobs: ‘Here’s to the crazy ones. The round pegs in square holes. The ones who see things differently. While some may see them as crazy, we make room for these kinds of people. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.’
‘We want our students to see themselves as leaders in their communities,’ Prof Thompson said, ‘That have a distinctive, particularity of experience to share, be it business studies, science and technology, Chinese literature, arts and sciences, law, or international and global affairs’.
He also paid tribute to UM Rector Wei Zhao’s ‘4-in-1’ model of education (discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education), to Prof Haydn Chen, ‘pater familias of collegiate system’, as well as to college fellows, teams, and students. ‘They authenticate it, make it live, make all possible,’ he said.
‘We wish our students to be precocious,’ Prof Thompson said. ‘To be advanced beyond their years, forward thinking, energetic. Students who galvanise this remarkable city of Macao, the Pearl River Delta and way beyond.’
