We all know that fruit is sweet. But have you eaten any fruit that claims to be sweeter than your first kiss? Recently a promotional sign hung above a fruit stall in the campus supermarket promises just that! Some people find the words ‘Sweeter than First Kiss’ funny and creative, while others think it’s just some claptrap designed to help sell more fruit. As the debate was raging about whether the supermarket was overdoing it, we interviewed some UM students and asked what they think are sweeter than their first kisses. Check out their answers below. What about you? What is sweeter to you than your first kiss?

Travel

For some people, there is perhaps no sweeter way to escape the worries and stress of everyday life than travelling. ‘Travelling is sweeter than the first kiss, because when you are travelling, you can forget all your troubles and cares, and make beautiful memories with your travel companions,’ says Carman Lei, a sophomore from the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA). Aaron Guo, a sophomore from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, thinks dreams are sweeter, because, ‘In dreams you don’t need to care about anything, and you don’t have any worries or sorrows,’ he says.

Love

This answer is not surprising, since the words ‘sweet’ and ‘first kiss’ automatically conjures up images of couples in love. Coco Li, a sophomore from the FBA, recalls those sweet days she and her boyfriend spent together in the last year of high school. ‘We went to school together and went home together. We had dinners together and talked about our futures. These are the ordinary things every couple would do, but to this day these things still feel very sweet and romantic to me,’ she says. Peak Hu, a sophomore from the same faculty, remembers a time when he and his girlfriend had a conflict. ‘We had a conflict, and then one day she called me from afar to patch things up, it was really sweet and I remember feeling very touched,’ he says.

Friendship

Romantic love is sweet, but so is love from friends. Daisy Wu, a sophomore from the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, still remembers how lost she felt in the first semester. ‘I had a hard time adjusting, and the courses for my major were very difficult, so I felt upset on a daily basis. But then I met some wonderful friends, who cared about me and were always there for me, which made me feel so warm, and helped me start every day with a positive attitude,’ she says.
