Three members from the University of Macau’s (UM) Public Speaking Team, namely Lisandra Wagan Fesalbon, Licca Chui Sin I, and Christy Cheang Ngan, recently entered the quarterfinal (speech category) of the Asian English Olympics 2015, which was held from 10 February to 14 February. This is the first time UM’s Public Speaking Team has participated in this contest.

The Asian English Olympics is an annual international event hosted by Binus University in Jarkarta, Indonesia. The contest includes seven categories, namely newscasting, storytelling, debate, scrabble, spelling bee, short story writing, and speech. This year’s contest attracted students from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Macao.

Unlike speech contest held in Macao and mainland China, contestants at this contest are required to prepare six different speeches: a prepared speech, a delivery speech, an extemporaneous speech, a humorous speech, a speech on table topics, and dramatic interpretation.

Randall Tran, coach of the Public Speaking Team, hopes the team will compete at other international contests and enter the next Asian English Olympics.
