Over the past few months, the various units of the University of Macau (UM) completed the challenging task of moving to the new campus, which was conducted in stages. Now, eight residential colleges (RCs) have become operational on the new campus, and several thousand students have moved into these colleges. After the 2014/2015 academic year starts, about 10,000 students, faculty members and staff will be studying and working on the new campus, which will bring numerous challenges for UM in terms of facilities management.
During this transitional period, emergency situations have happened in various buildings. For example, on 15 August, one day before the students moved into the eight RCs, the Information and Communication Technology Office (ICTO) detected in the morning that the network at one of the RCs was not working properly. The ICTO also detected some problems with the UPS at the same RC. The unstable power supply not only caused the fire alarm system to sound false alarms, but also caused some air conditioning units to stop working properly. Later the Facility Operations and Maintenance Section under the Campus Management Office noticed some problems with the busbar connection of the low voltage power switchgear in the electrical room, so they, along with colleagues from the RCs, the Construction Planning and Implementation Section, and the building contractor Guangdong Nam Yue Group Co. Ltd, immediately carried out emergency repairs. By 6:00pm, the power supply was restored. But some facilities, such as the lifts, air conditioning units, and hot water dispensers, were still not working properly. After several hours of emergency repairs, some of these facilities resumed working. To make sure that all the students could move into the RCs as quickly as possible, the colleagues not only worked until late at night that day but also returned to the campus the next day, which was Saturday, to continue working.
There were also some problems with the water supply system at another RC, but our colleagues carried out emergency repairs as soon as they could, and restored the system to normal within a relatively short period of time. Now, UM has completed inspections of the RCs, and will follow up on the inspection results. The building contractor, Guangdong Nam Yue Group Co. Ltd, will also carry out a comprehensive inspection of all low voltage power switchgears to make sure that all equipment can operate safely.
When the new campus becomes fully operational, we are bound to encounter many challenges. But we believe that with the understanding and the joint efforts of all UM members, all problems will be solved satisfactorily. The new academic year is about to begin. UM would like to take this moment to thank all the colleagues for their hard work.
