Scholars from the University of Macau (UM) Departments of English and Portuguese launched two new books at a special event on literary translation, held in São Paulo, Brazil, in early August. The publication of these works further strengthens the international reputation of UM as a centre for excellence in the study, practice, and teaching of literature and translation.
The event was held at the Casa Guilherme de Almeida, a state institution for the promotion and study of literary translation, where Department of English professor Kit Kelen launched his bilingual volume of poetry Arbres et Étoiles/Trees and Stars (L’Harmattan, 2014), with French translations by Béatrice Machet-Franke, and Department of Portuguese assistant professor Dr Raquel Abi-Sâmara launched her translation of Stefan Zweig’s psychological novel Angst/ Medo, in Trêz novelas femininas, (Zahar, 2014).
During the event, Prof Kelen and Dr Abi-Sâmara read from their new work and participated in a public seminar on the theoretical, practical, and pedagogical aspects of literary translation, chaired by Prof John Milton from the University of São Paulo.
