Brian Montgomery, an internationally acclaimed bass-baritone who has performed with many important opera companies throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, pronounced the acoustics of the University Hall on the University of Macau’s (UM) new campus to be most agreeable to both singing and speaking voices, after testing the acoustics there by singing Broadway songs and opera arias without any amplification or accompaniment. Mr. Montgomery did the testing during his 12 June visit to the new campus with members from UM’s Moon Chun Memorial College (MCM College). The visit was co-organised by the British Business Association of Macao (BBAM) and the France Macau Business Association (FMBA).

Mr. Montgomery and other members of the delegation were very impressed with the new campus, saying that it is a “great success”. Many commented on the quiet and calm ambience and the green environment, and expressed hope that the new campus will remain this way when it becomes fully operational. The guests also said that they hope the new campus can inspire other institutions in Macao to increase green space.

“The buildings we saw were amazing, but they are just bricks and mortar,” said Eileen Stow, chairman of the BBAM. “It is the knowledge that those buildings are being filled with such drive, energy and enthusiasm as surrounded us that day that fills us with confidence that the new campus is now a place to watch and a place that will put Macao on the international stage for positive reasons (along with egg tarts!)"

Franklin Willemyns, chairman of the FMBA, was equally complimentary about the new campus and the new facilities.

Rutger Verschuren, vice chairman of the FMBA, wrote in a thank-you letter to MCM College Master Prof. Kevin Thompson after the visit, “I feel compelled to share how impressed I am with what you and your wonderful team are accomplishing on the new campus, which will definitely place Macao on the world map for education."
