Hengqin Island, Zhuhai, recently has become the focus of media attention both at home and abroad. To the west of Taipa, Macao, and south of the Lotus Bridge, across a narrow, 250-metre-wide waterway, is this island. I drive through the underwater tunnel, which I’ve heard is 1,570 metres long, for approximately two minutes, before I arrive at the other end of the tunnel, with the University of Macau’s brand new campus greeting my eyes.
