The Institute of Microelectronics of the University of Macau (UM) recently held the three-day Integrated Circuit (IC) Experience Summer Camp for secondary school students from Macao. The event attracted  26 participants from ten secondary schools, including Pui Ching Middle School (Macau), Hou Kong Middle School, and Macau Pooi To Middle School.

The camp aimed to provide the valuable experience of designing ICs for local secondary school students. Thanks to the resources of UM’s State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, the students had the chance to design their own IC using advanced equipment.  During the event, Faculty of Science and Technology Associate Professor Law Man Kay, as well as Assistant Professors Chan Chi Hang and Un Ka Fai, told the students about the history and the basic background knowledge of IC, as well as the current IC industry in China.

Later the students were guided by master’s students to design their custom-made ICs. Once they were completed, the students also had the chance to measure the prototype ICs. Through this experience, the students gained a better understanding of the whole IC prduction process. During the camp, the students also showed great interest in IC design and the research works at the lab.
