A seminar on the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy in Macao and its future, co-organised by the Chinese Academy of Governance (CAG) and the University of Macau (UM), was held at UM yesterday, as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Macao’s handover to China. Participants had in-depth discussions on a wide range of issues, including the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy in Macao, the diversification of Macao’s economy, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the governance of the local society, and policies for improving people’s quality of life.
UM’s Vice Rector for Student Affairs Billy So delivered a welcome speech, in which he highly praised the great achievements Macao has attained over the past two decades thanks to the successful implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy. Liu Jianfei, dean of the School of International Strategic Studies of the CAG, talked about the essence of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy as well as its relevance and significance in contemporary society. Wu Zhiliang, vice president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, said that with the continued implementation of the policy, Macao would see a better future.
Many distinguished guests attended the opening ceremony, including representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the CAG, UM, and China Science and Technology Exchange Centre. Prof Lok Wai Kin from UM’s Faculty of Law and Prof Lam Iok Fong, director of UM’s Centre for Macau Studies, gave keynote speeches.
