The University of Macau (UM) today (28 October) held a talk titled ‘The Journey of Humanity: The Origins of Wealth and Inequality’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Oded Galor, a renowned economist, was the guest speaker. During the talk, he explored the relationships between several major issues of humanity, such as development, poverty, growth, wealth, and inequality. Available both online and in a physical setting with livestreaming, the talk attracted many participants.
In his opening speech, Hu Weixing, dean of UM’s Faculty of Social Sciences, said that Oded Galor is a renowned economist and Herbert H Goldberger Professor of Economics at Brown University. As founder of the unified growth theory, Galor has extensively studied human history and the underlying factors behind the transition from stagnation to growth as well as the widespread inequalities on a global scale. In addition, he is a pioneer in exploring the influence of demographic diversity and inequality in comparative economic development.
The talk focused on his new book The Journey of Humanity: The Origins of Wealth and Inequality, which was published earlier this year in 30 different languages. During the talk, he discussed why humans progressed so unequally around the world, resulting in the great disparities between nations that exist today. After the talk, the speaker exchanged ideas with participants both online and offline.
