The University of Macau (UM) today (8 August) held an online talk titled ‘Digital Transformation of Post-COVID World: On Education for Scientific Innovation’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Lionel Ni, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) and chair professor of computer science and engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was the guest speaker. During the talk, he discussed scientific innovation education and talent development against the backdrop of digital transformation.
During the talk, the speaker discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on traditional business models and the acceleration of digital transformation as a result of the pandemic. According to him, digital transformation relies more on people than technology, especially innovative professionals with an ‘end-to-end’ mindset who are able to create comprehensive solutions by integrating different aspects of a business model, including technology, product, data, process, and customer needs. He also believes that universities need to inject new impetus into their talent development strategies and re-examine their education methods in order to nurture the kind of professionals that the new era and the new market need. He also shared the rationales and goals of HKUST (Guangzhou) on scientific innovation education.
