While celebrating its 40th anniversary, the University of Macau (UM) has set out a development plan for the next five years. As the university prepares to move forward with new ideas and strategies, it is delighted to receive congratulatory messages from the local community, partners, and alumni. Their great expectations will propel the university to, as the anniversary slogan says, ‘set sail for new horizons’.
Exploring a New Path
According to UM Rector Yonghua Song, UM has positioned itself as a university of and for Macao. It will co-develop the Greater Bay Area, integrate into the national development strategy, and increase its degree of internationalisation. In the next five years, UM aims to become an internationally recognised university of excellence through quality student‑centred education, internationally impactful research, and high-quality community service.
Rector Song stressed that the launch of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will create new opportunities for Macao and the university. In the next five years, in order to better support the diversification of Macao’s economy, the university will continue to improve its talent development system, and will cooperate with the Macao SAR government’s education policy by increasing student enrolment and establishing a well‑defined, demand‑driven postgraduate education system. The university will also improve its research strategy with the ‘four threes’ at the core and will continue to build a ‘5-in-1’ technology transfer system, focusing on finding a path for the commercialisation of research results, as well as actively building a social service platform for Macao.
The university will expand its international network in the next five years. Measures toward this end will include deepening long-term partnerships with higher education institutions in Portuguese-and English‑speaking countries, recruiting international students from more countries and regions, and strengthening its partnerships with leading universities in the mainland.
