The Sixth Round Table on English Major Education in Comprehensive Universities in China will be held on Nov. 15-20, 2003 in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao. The University of Macau is co-hosting this important event.
The Round Table on English Major Education in Comprehensive Universities started in 1998 under the supervision of the University English Major Advisory Board of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The purpose was to allow heads/course leaders of English Department of key comprehensive universities in China have a chance to meet annually to discuss issues concerning English language teaching policies, research directions, reform proposals, teaching methodology and implementations.
The first Round Table was co-hosted by Fudan University (Shanghai) and Nanjing University in 1998. The second one was hosted by the English Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1999. The third, fourth and fifth Round Tables were hosted respectively by Peking University, Sichuan University (Chengdu) and Nankai University (Tianjin). In April 2003 it was decided that the Sixth Round Table be hosted by the School of Foreign Languages of Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou) which was advised to invite one or two universities (outside the mainland) to be co-organizers.
This is the first and very important opportunity for the Department of English at UM, to join in the national activity concerning language teaching, and at the same time, it is indeed an inspiring experience for the University of Macau to be a member of the key comprehensive universities in China in the English Major Education area.
