Recognized as the Olympics in the field of Oncology in China, the Fifth Chinese Conference on Oncology (CCO) was held from 19 to 22 Sep in Shijiazhuang, China.. The conference was sponsored by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and the Oncology Chapter of the Chinese Medical Society and co-sponsored by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). With the topic “Cure Cancer Scientifically, Improve Human Health Successfully,” the Fifth CCO has attracted more than 4,000 participants, including hundreds of domestic and overseas academicians as well as well-known oncology experts. This was an influential and high-level academic conference.

Ms. Gao Jianli, a PhD student from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM), was invited to give a presentation titled “Systems Pharmacological Evaluation of Chinese Medicines” at this conference. Being the youngest invited speaker, Ms. Gao introduced the pharmaceutical analysis in antitumor effects of Yanhusuo San, an archaic Chinese medical prescription. Mainly focusing on the characteristics of the antitumor effects of Chinese herbs and implementing the multidisciplinary approach, the analysis establishes a technology platform useful for assessing the antitumor effects of Chinese herbs and related research, providing a research foundation for developing internationalized innovative drugs from Chinese herbs.

Ms. Gao’s presentation was widely recognized by the experts and scholars at the conference. Scientists from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were highly interested in her study, and decided to arrange a meeting with Ms. Gao for technical cooperation. Ms.Gao’s research design also interested Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Shandong University and they all showed their will of future technical cooperation with Ms. Gao.

During her PhD study, Ms. Gao has published seven papers in international journals and has several experiences of giving presentations at international academic conferences. Presently, under the supervision of her supervisor Prof. Wang Yitao, her co-supervisor Prof. He Tongchuan from the University of Chicago, and the PhD Thesis Advisory Committee, Ms. Gao is developing new systemic experimental methods and innovative techniques in Molecular and Cellular Biology by integrating the leading concepts in pharmacology and traditional Chinese medical sciences, and applying the new discoveries in the multidisciplinary studies of biological medicine. This research project is sponsored by the Science and Technology Development Fund of the Macao Government and the Research Committee of UM.
