Wang Guoqiang, vice minister of health of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and chief of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, recently visited the University of Macau (UM). Wang met with staff and students from UM’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences and the State Key Laboratory for Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. Wang was impressed with UM’s achievements in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and expressed five expectations in this respect: 1, keep abreast of the latest trends and seize every opportunity; 2, love TCM and be confident in its future; 3, identify priorities and make things happen; 4, step up cooperation to achieve win-win, and 5, promote traditional culture and encourage innovation. Wang particularly mentioned the importance of studying the relationship between the theories and thought concerning TCM and the promotion of traditional Chinese culture. He stressed that traditional Chinese culture is the foundation and source of inspiration for technological innovation in TCM, citing that traditional Chinese notions that “prevention is better than cure” and that “humans should change the rhythm of their lives with the change of seasons for health reasons” are at the core of TCM.
