The University of Macau’s (UM) Moon Chun Memorial College held a commencement dinner on 17 Sept. The dinner opened with a co-performance by the Macao Orchestra and College Master Prof. Kevin Thompson, a world-renowned trumpet player, composer and conductor.

The Moon Chun Memorial College is one of the residential colleges at UM, with Prof. Thompson serving as its master. Each residential college at UM is a small learning and living community that aims to help its members achieve well-rounded development by arranging for students of different ages, nationalities, family and cultural backgrounds to live and study together.

One of the numbers Prof. Thompson and the Macao Orchestra co-performed at the dinner was Fanfare for the Common Man, which was written by the American composer Aaron Copland during World World II. It was the first time Prof. Thompson worked with the Macao Orchestra, setting the stage for future collaboration between UM and the Macao Orchestra. Prof. Thompson expressed special thanks to Dr. Chan Sui Kau’s family, who are the donor of the Moon Chun Memorial College; the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR; as well as the management of the Macao Orchestra, for their great support.

Guests who were invited to the commencement dinner included Dr. Chan Sui Kau’s representatives Ms. Chan Suk Ling and Mr. Chan Wing Sun, British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macao Ms. Caroline Wilson, UK Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong and Macao Mr. Stephen Cartwright, Macao Orchestra Manager Mr. Wong Ka, UM Rector Prof. Wei Zhao, UM Vice Rector Prof. Haydn Chen, Dean of Students Dr. Peter Yu, Pearl Jubilee College Master Prof. George Watt, Faculty of Education Dean Prof. Fan Xitao, Dr. Glenn McCartney from the Faculty of Business Administration, and Dr. Patricia A Thompson from the Faculty of Education.
