The 2013 Cross-Strait Forum on Postgraduate Education, organised by the University of Macau (UM) Graduate School, opened on 3 November on UM’s new campus. The two-day forum was part of a series of activities in celebration of the inauguration of UM’s new campus. The forum consisted of two parts, the Summit on Postgraduate Education, and the PhD Student Symposium.

Speakers at the Summit on Postgraduate Education, whose theme was “Life of Research and Research of Life”, included Prof. Chung-Laung Liu, former president of Tsing Hua University, Taiwan; Prof. Chen Shiyi, vice president and dean of the Graduate School at Peking University and secretary-general of the Association of Chinese Graduate Schools; Prof. Jui-Jen Chou, associate dean of academic affairs at Taiwan University; Prof. Ben Young, assistant dean of the Graduate School at the University of Hong Kong; Prof. Wei Zhao, rector of UM; and Prof. Maggie Fu, acting dean of the Graduate School, UM.

The second part of the forum, the PhD Student Symposium, was held on 4 November. Prof. Chia-Wei Woo, founding president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, gave a keynote speech. Approximately 20 outstanding PhD students from the four Chinese-speaking regions also attended the event to participate in group discussion sessions with UM students on the latest research achievements in scientific and engineering fields.

Prof. Rui Martins, vice rector (research) of UM, delivered a welcome speech at the dinner after the forum.

Prof. Maggie Fu, acting dean of UM Graduate School; and Prof. Philip Chen, dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology were invited to deliver a welcome speech and a closing speech respectively.
