Prof. Tang Kaijian, from Department of History, University of Macau, has long been dedicated to the study of Macau history and history of Sino-West communication. Recently, his article Textual Researches on the deeds of the Big Pirate, Lin Feng from Eastern Canton in Long-Wan period, Ming Dynasty— Centered on the related historical records from Liu Yaohui’s “ Du Fu Shu Yi”.
Lin Feng was one of the biggest pirates on the sea of Minnan and Canton area in the late Longqing and early Wanli period. He was also a key figure to make out the communication between China and Spain in Ming Dynasty. This article made good use of the newly discovered and unique copy of “Du Fu Shu Yi” by then Fujian local governor Liu Yaohui. Besides, Prof. Tang Kaijian also took other Western materials into consideration to study pirate Lin Feng and the relationship between Spanish merchants and Ming Dynasty. This article is a significant research achievement of Sino-West traffic history and marine history.
