Prof Liu Jianhong, professor of the University of Macau (UM) and president of the Asian Criminological Society (ACS), delivered an opening speech and a keynote speech entitled “Culture and Criminal Justice – A Theory of Relational Justice” at the 6th annual conference of the ACS, which was held at the Osaka University of Commerce from 27 June to 29 June.

Under the theme of “Advancing Criminological and Criminal Justice Theories from Asia”, this year’s conference included 65 seminars covering topics such as restorative justice, crime and gender, drug-related crimes, economic crimes, juvenile delinquency, and crime prevention. Guest speakers at the seminars included Prof Robert Agnew, immediate past president of the American Society of Criminology and renowned scholar from Emory University; Prof John Braithwaite from the Australian National University; Prof Steven F Messner, former president of the American Society of Criminology and scholar from the State University of New York at Albany; and Prof Ken-ichi Ohbuchi from Tohoko University, who was also the immediate past president of the Japanese Association of Criminal Psychology.

The conference was organised by the ACS with assistance from the Japan Network of Criminological Association (JNCA), which is formed by six major criminological associations in Japan, namely the Japanese Association of Criminal Psychology, the Japanese Association of Criminology, the Japanese Association of Offenders Rehabilitation, the Japanese Association of Social Problems, the Japanese Association of Sociological Criminology, and the Japanese Society of Law and Forensic Social Services. The event attracted 456 scholars from 37 countries and regions and more than 270 individual papers were submitted to the conference.
