The University of Macau (UM) Moon Chun Memorial College and Hong Kong St John Ambulance recently offered a first-aid certificate course to college members.
The five-day intensive course attracted 30 college members. Participants who complete 30 hours of lectures and pass a three-hour examination receive a first-aid certificate.
During the course, instructor Yvonne Jen explained the concept of first aid and taught students how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the various bandaging techniques.
Firstaid is vital, immediate care administered to an individual who has been injured or has suddenly become incapacitated. It includes both self-help and home care if medical assistance is unavailable or delayed. Firstaid also determines the sequence and priority of treatment in an emergency, so the best possible course of action may be accomplished for the greatest number of people.
Strongly allied to ‘Healthy Living’, one of the core competencies integral to residential living and learning, the presence of well-trained first-aiders safeguards the health of both College residents and UM students and colleagues.
Hong Kong St John Ambulance is a charitable organisation, with a long history dating back over a century. It is one of the world’s largest service providers for training first-aiders.
