The Macao SAR government today (7 December) held a ceremony to award decorations, medals, and certificates of merit to individuals and organisations, in recognition of their achievements, their contributions to society, and their dedicated services. Many University of Macau (UM) members are among this year’s recipients.

Bishop D José Lai, a member of UM’s University Assembly, received the Decoration of Honour – Silver Lotus; Prof Manuel Trigo from the Faculty of Law received the Medal of Merit – Professions; Ma Ieng, a second-year student from the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, received the Certificate of Merit, Honorific Title – Merit; Zhang Qingwen, a first-year student of biomedical sciences from the Faculty of Health Sciences, received the Certificate of Merit, Honorific Title – Merit; Sou Ka Fong, a first-year student from the Department of Finance and Business Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, received the Certificate of Merit, Honorific Title – Merit; and UM’s Swimming Team received the Certificate of Merit, Honorific Title – Merit.

D José Lai is the 23rd bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Macau and the second Chinese bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Macau. He received the Medal of Merit – Philanthropy from the Macao SAR government in 2006.

Prof Manuel Trigo is the director of the Centre for Law Studies at UM. He also serves in several important external positions, including the position of the director of the Legal and Judicial Training Centre of the Macao SAR. Over the years Prof Trigo has made a significant contribution to the legal and judicial fields as well as to professional training, law popularisation, and the development of the legal and judicial systems in Macao.

Ma Ieng placed second in the longest airtime category at the 2015 Red Bull Paper Wings, with an airtime of 13.76 seconds, beating more than 46,000 contestants from 80 countries and regions.

Zhang Qingwen and Sou Ka Fong have won an Award for Water Technology at the INTEL ISEF2015. 

Members of UM’s Swimming Team, including Lo Wai Lam, Tam Chi Yan, Lei On Kei, Mak Chong Hin, Chao Man Hou, and Li Jinding, broke eight records and won 11 gold medals and a silver medal at a national inter-varsity swimming competition.
