Gini Chang, a graduate of the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Education (FED), recently delivered a speech as the student representative of UM’s Class of 2017 at the Congregation 2017. Chang was a student of primary education and a member of the Honours College. She said she was very surprised to receive the invitation from the faculty to serve as the student representative, adding that she spent three weeks on practising how to deliver a speech properly. According to Chang, many professors at the university left a deep impression on her during her four years of studies at UM. They include Dr Chiu Siu Miu and Dr Liu Nai-hua from the FED, from whom Chang learned how one’s life can inspire others. Chang added that she was also inspired by teachers from her primary school. Under the instruction of her professors and teachers, Chang realised that teaching is not merely about passing down knowledge, but also about helping students to live their lives to the fullest and develop a positive attitude. In her speech, Chang said that each day is a lesson and each person has something to teach us. She also encouraged all UM students to learn as much as possible during their time in college because what they have learned in school will be very useful to them in their internships and jobs in the future. In September this year, Chang will start to pursue a master’s degree in education outside Macao. She said she will return to Macao and work as a teacher after graduation. ‘Teaching is a work of heart’ is Chang’s educational philosophy, which she plans to adhere to at all times on her career path.
