The Department of Portuguese under the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) held the 18th Portuguese Speech Contest on 26 November. The event aimed to increase students’ interest in learning Portuguese and reward the best-performing students.
This year’s contest attracted students from UM, Macau University of Science and Technology, and Macao Polytechnic Institute (IPM), who delivered speeches on the topic ‘Não há mal que sempre dure, nem bem que nunca acabe’ (There is no everlasting harm, nor never-ending good). All contestants went through a strict screening process, and they were also interviewed by a panel of experts and public figures. In the end, UM student Guo Yanzhi won the first prize, while the second and the third prizes went to IPM students Liu Shao’en and Huang Xiaoqao respectively. UM student Zhang Lei won an honorary prize.
The Portuguese Speech Contest is an annual event organised by UM’s Department of Portuguese. The prizes for this year’s contest were sponsored by local donors, namely the Macao Foundation (first prize), Macau Tribune Newspaper (Tribuna de Macau) (second prize), the Oriental Foundation (Fundação Oriente) (third prize), and the National Overseas Bank (Banco Nacional Ultramarino) (honorary prize). The Macao Post also sponsored gifts for the participants.
