A delegation from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, led by Vice Minister of Science and Technology Huang Wei, recently visited the University of Macau (UM). Huang recognised the outstanding achievements made by the university in recent years in education and technological innovation. He also pointed out that the central government supports the university’s development, adding that promoting the development of research universities is beneficial to technological innovation in Macao.
During the meeting, UM Rector Yonghua Song told the guests about the university’s development in higher education and technological innovation. UM is the only international comprehensive public university in Macao. With the great support from the central government, the Macao SAR government, and all sectors of society, the university has produced many outstanding graduates for the SAR through its ‘4-in-1’ education model. In terms of industry-academia collaboration, UM actively nurtures innovative and entrepreneurial talent through its national co-working space, as well as the first industry-academia demonstration base in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area established through the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute. UM will continue to respond to the needs of the country and make full use of its strengths to actively promote technological innovation in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
Huang recognised the outstanding achievements made by UM in education and technological innovation in recent years, and was pleased to see the rapid progress of the university in scientific research. He pointed out that the central government supports UM’s development, and promoting the development of research universities is beneficial to technological innovation in Macao. He hopes that UM will further accelerate the pace of cultivating world-class talent and building a platform for technological innovation for Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
During the visit, Huang took a test ride on Macao’s first autonomous bus. He also visited the Centre for Cognitive and Brain Sciences, the Super Intelligent Computer Centre, the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (SKL-IOTSC), and the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). He was briefed by staff from relevant departments on the current development of the centres and the lab, key research projects, and the latest research achievements.
Accompanying the delegation were inspector Ruan Xiangping and researchers Zhong Wenyan and Liu Yuhui from the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology; Researcher Li Chunjing from the General Office, Ministry of Science and Technology; Ge Wei, vice rector of UM; Chuxia Deng, dean of the FHS at UM; Xu Chengzhong, dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and interim director of the Institute of Collaborative Innovation at UM; Yang Zhixin, director of the Research Services and Knowledge Transfer Office at UM; and Ma Shaodan, assistant director of SKL-IOTSC at UM.
