The University of Macau (UM) Office of Sports Affairs (OSA) held the 2019-2020 UM Sports Awards Presentation Ceremony to commend outstanding student athletes and university sports teams for their excellent performance and contributions, as well as to thank sports scholarship donors for their support. This year, 16 UM students and two university sports teams received sports scholarships, and 30 coaches received certificates of appreciation.
Although UM sports teams’ training and participation in competitions were affected by the pandemic this year, they still won 13 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals in the 2019/2020 academic year. The total amount of sports scholarships for the 2019/2020 academic year has increased from MOP 170,000 to MOP 270,000, with the additional MOP 100,000 being donated by Bank of China Macau Branch (BOC). To thank BOC’s support, OSA held a plaque presentation ceremony during the awards presentation ceremony.
UM Vice Rector Billy So thanked the sports scholarship donors for their support to the development of sports affairs at UM, and praised the hard work and contributions of the coaches and student athletes.
In addition to awarding scholarships based on the students’ athletic performance, each year, UM also provides scholarships to up to 30 student athletes recommended by their high school principals, including the UM Golden Lotus Scholarship (up to eight recipients), UM Silver Lotus Scholarship (up to ten recipients), and a one-time cash prize of MOP 5000 (up to 12 recipients).
Among the guests present at the ceremony were: Chen Fen, director of personal banking and channel management at BOC; Lai Pak Leng, chief executive officer of Parry Group Investment and Development Company Limited; Richard Kuan Fan Kit, deputy manager of Lisboa Holdings Limited; Rui Martins, vice rector of UM; Paul Pang, dean of students at UM; Katrina Cheong, director of the Communications Office at UM; Cindy Lam, director of ADO at UM; and Grace Chau, director of OSA at UM.
