The University of Macau (UM) today (23 September) held the UM Teaching Excellence Award Seminar. Associate Professor Wang Ruibing from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, who is the recipient of the UM Teaching Excellence Award for the 2018/2019 academic year, gave a talk titled ‘Connecting Classrooms to Reality’. The talk attracted many UM faculty members, students, high school teachers and students, as well as members of the general public.
In his speech, Rector Yonghua Song said that each year, the Teaching Excellence Award recognises one distinguished faculty member who has demonstrated excellence as an educator. It signifies the university’s commitment to pursuing excellence in teaching and enhancing students’ learning experience. Prof Wang joined UM in 2014. In addition to the UM Teaching Excellence Award, Prof Wang received a third prize in the Natural Science Award category at the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards and the China Macrocyclic Arenes and Supramolecular Chemistry Rising Star Award in 2019. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in SCI-indexed journals, with a total citation frequency of over 2600 and an H-index of 29 (Google Scholar).
During the talk, Prof Wang said that in a digital era, students can find all sorts of information on the internet with ease. Although this has made teachers somewhat less authoritative in the classroom, it has also opened up a plethora of possibilities for educators to make their lectures more innovative and bring the real world into the classroom. Prof Wang also shared his insights on connecting knowledge to real-world scenarios, as well as his experience in striving for excellence in teaching.
