The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) recently held a summer camp for outstanding undergraduate students from mainland universities. The event attracted over 200 applications. In the end, 82 outstanding students were admitted after a rigorous selection process. Participants say the camp was a unique experience that combined theory with practice, adding that it broadened their horizons in postgraduate research, enriched their knowledge, and provided a platform for them to interact with UM students and explore collaboration opportunities. They also enjoyed visiting the world heritage sites in Macao.
At the opening ceremony, FHS Dean Chuxia Deng and IAPME Director Tang Zikang warmly welcomed the students who come from different universities in mainland China, including Peking University, Zhejiang University, the Dalian University of Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Central South University, Jilin University, Chongqing University, and Lanzhou University. Prof Deng and Prof Tang shared UM’s history and latest developments, as well as their vision for the FHS and the IAPME. Representatives from the Graduate School also provided some useful information about postgraduate admission and scholarships.
The one-week summer camp featured lectures given by UM professors that covered a wide range of topics, including biomedical sciences, applied physics, and materials science. Participants were given the opportunity to participate in some ongoing research projects conducted by UM professors and postgraduate students. During the laboratory sessions, participants learned to operate state-of-the-art equipment, which enhanced their understanding of relevant research topics. Accompanied by UM professors and students, participants joined a campus tour to understand the university’s history, latest developments, academic achievements, research environment, and student life. They also visited the world heritage sites in Macao to learn more about the history and culture of the city.
