The preliminary result of the Macao Science and Technology Awards has been released. The University of Macau (UM) was recommended for the sole first prize in the Natural Science Award category. UM also received a second prize and a third prize in the Natural Science Award category, a second prize and two third prizes in the Technological Invention Award category, and a second prize and two third prizes in the Technology Progress Award category. Some members on the evaluation committee noted that Macao is progressing faster in science and technology than mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
A total of fifty-six applications for the awards were received. According to The Rules and Regulations on Science and Technology Awards, the evaluation committee followed the principle of avoidance of conflict of interest, and conducted evaluation in a fair, open and just manner. The committee suggested six prizes for the Natural Science Award category, including one first prize, two second prizes and three third prizes, six prizes for the Technological Invention Award category, including two second prizes and four third prizes, as well as five prizes for the Technology Progress Award category, including two second prizes and three third prizes.
Prof. Rui Martins, UM’s vice rector (research), said that the numerous prizes are yet another recognition of the high level UM has achieved in scientific research. He thanked colleagues from the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and the Research and Development Administration Office for their tireless effort, and expressed his hope that colleagues can continue to work together to innovate and help UM scale new heights in the future.
The first prize in the Natural Science Award category, with a one-million cash prize, went to UM’s project, “Time-Frequency Analysis of Transient Signals and Algorithm: Harmonic and Clifford Analysis of Signals”, which experts considered unanimously to be outstanding and with a considerable academic impact. “Association Study of Pharmacology and Quality in Chinese Medicine” and “Investigation and Innovation in the General Purpose Computation based on GPU (GPGPU)”, two other projects from UM, received a second prize and a third prize respectively in the Natural Science Award category.
In the Technological Invention Award category, UM’s “Analog and Mixed-Signal Interfaces for a Ubiquitous Electronic World” won a second prize, and the “Three-Dimensional Pulse Width Modulation Techniques and Its Applications in Three-Phase Four-Wire Active Filters” and the “Wireless UV Flame Detectors for Fire-safety Applications” received third prizes.
On the Technology Progress Award front, UM’s “Technologies and Applications of Portuguese-Chinese Machine Translation System” won a second prize, and “The Analysis of Stability Problem and Loop Flow Problem in Macau Electric Network and Its Implementation” and “The Technology for Creating a Portal for the Macao SAR Government and for Ensuring Data Safety, Timeliness, Consistency and Integrity and the Implementation Thereof” won third prizes.
If no objection to the proposed list of prize recipients is received within fifteen days of the release of the list or if the committee determines that the objection is invalid, the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR will submit the proposed list to the chief executive for approval. The award ceremony is tentatively scheduled for October.
