A delegation led by Wu Yan, vice minister of education, visited the University of Macau (UM) today (15 February). Wu praised UM’s development and achievements, and said that the Ministry of Education will continue to support the university in conducting high-level innovative research, developing Macao into an international hub for high-calibre talent, building a high-quality campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and serving national strategic needs.
During his visit to UM, Wu was accompanied by Kong Chi Meng, director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) of the Macao SAR Government, Teng Sio Hong, deputy director of DSEDJ, and Li Yongxian, deputy director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR. The delegation was warmly received by the UM leadership including Lam Kam Seng Peter, chair of the University Council, Rector Yonghua Song, and Vice Rectors Michael Hui and Ge Wei.
Lam thanked the Ministry of Education for its long-standing support to UM. He said that UM will continue to leverage its strengths to accelerate the development of high-level platforms for industry-academia collaboration in Macao. The university will also continue to pursue excellence in education and research, and enhance its international competitiveness. Song said that as a university rooted in Macao, UM is committed to participating in the development of the Greater Bay Area, integrating into the nation, and going global. He also highlighted the university’s dedication to promoting scientific and technological innovation, cultivating technology talent, and contributing to Macao’s sustainable development. UM will press ahead with the development of the campus in the Cooperation Zone. By capitalising on Macao’s strengths and serving the country’s needs, the university aims to support Macao’s better integration into national development, and establish the city as an international hub for high-calibre talent and a new model for innovative cooperation and development in higher education in Macao.
The delegation also visited the University Gallery and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City to learn more about UM’s development, campus facilities, research advancements, and achievements in promoting connectivity and deeper integration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The delegation also included Chen Wei, deputy director of Bureau IV of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council; Yang Dan, director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs and Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education; and Zhou Tianhua, director of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. The delegation was also received by the following UM representatives: Chris Leung, secretary-general of the University Council; Carol Wong, director of the Rector’s Office; and Wang Chunming, director of the Global Affairs Office.
