To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Macao SAR, the inauguration of the third Chief Executive of Macao SAR Mr. Chui Sai On, and the groundbreaking for the new campus of the University of Macau (UM), heads of famous universities from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including President of Peking University Zhou Qifeng,President of National Taiwan University Lee Si Chen, and Vice Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong Tsui Lap-Chee, will come to Macao at UM’s invitation, to witness the historic moment that will mark a glorious, brand-new page in the history of Macao’s higher education. The university heads will also attend the Cross-strait University Summit to be held on 21 December (Monday). The Summit, organized by the Macao SAR Government and hosted by UM, aims to provide a platform for attendees to exchange views and share success experience on a wide range of issues such as universities’ strategies for and objectives of meeting international standards, how to build high-caliber faculty teams, and how to nurture outstanding graduates, etc.
The Summit will take the forms of keynote speech, individual speeches and group discussion. In the morning session, Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China Mr. Yuan Guiren will deliver a keynote speech on the development of higher education in the Mainland, to be followed by a speech by Secretary-elect for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Mr. Cheong U. In the afternoon session heads of famous universities from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan will give individual speeches revolving around four themes, namely “building world-class universities”, “developing high-calibre faculty teams”, “undergraduate education underpins a university’s development” and “cultivating university spirit and nurturing outstanding graduates”. Their speeches will provide information on the status quo and characteristics of their respective universities and will cover a wide range of subjects such as “how to build world-class universities and first-rate faculty teams”, “how to successfully run a university”, “the development of research-oriented universities”, “how to nurture outstanding bachelor’s graduates with higher education displaying a trend towards increased globalization, higher quality, and diversification”, “nurturing outstanding graduates specializing in engineering”, and “quality assurance for higher education”, etc.
