Students and faculty from various residential colleges of the University of Macau (UM) travelled to Xiushui County in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, to provide volunteer teaching services at local primary schools. The initiative aimed to enhance UM students’ community service skills, leadership, teamwork, and sense of social responsibility.

Since 2023, the Macao SAR Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR have been supporting the country’s rural revitalisation strategy, with Xiushui County as the focal point. Students from Cheng Yu Tung College, Choi Kai Yau College, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, and Stanley Ho East Asia College at UM travelled to Xiushui County in separate groups and delivered lessons in science, English, arts and crafts, physical education, and healthy living to local students. They also visited local families to share their learning experiences. Additionally, the UM students visited the Autumn Harvest Uprising Memorial Hall in Xiushui County, the former residence of Huang Tingjian in Shuangjing Village, and learned about the production techniques of Ninghong black tea, a national intangible cultural heritage, to deepen their understanding of the country.

UM’s residential colleges organise a variety of service-learning initiatives on a regular basis to encourage students to take an active role in planning and carrying out volunteer work, showing care for disadvantaged communities, and providing services to communities in mainland China, Macao, and beyond.
