The University of Macau (UM) has launched a training programme in traditional Chinese arts for art teachers in Macao. The programme is funded by the China National Arts Fund (CNAF) and will start on 24 June. Applications for the programme are now open until 9 June 2024.

The training programme is UM’s first CNAF-funded project. Zhang Zexun, associate professor in the Faculty of Education (FED) at UM and inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage, and a team of doctoral students were responsible for the project design and fund application. According to FED, a total of 1,231 projects applied for the fund, but only 110 were approved, representing a success rate of just 8.94 per cent. The faculty hopes that the programme will enhance the aesthetic skills, art appreciation, and artistic creation of local art teachers in traditional Chinese culture. The total duration of the programme is six months, and teachers in the programme include leading experts and scholars from renowned universities. The programme consists of six sections: aesthetics and theory of art education; creation and appreciation of traditional Chinese art; teaching of traditional Chinese art; seminars and exchanges; artistic creation; and participation in an exhibition.
