The University of Macau (UM) today (22 April) held the fifth lecture of the UM Scholar Research Forum series titled ‘Urban Underground Space and Big Data’. Zhou Wanhuan, head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and professor of geotechnical engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology, who is also a coordinator of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, was the keynote speaker. The event combined both online and in-person elements and attracted a full-house audience.
In the spatial urbanisation system, the utilisation of underground space resources is a global, multi-factor, and three-dimensional process and has become the top priority of urban sustainable development. During the talk, Prof Zhou introduced two underground space development technologies, namely shield tunneling and immersed tunneling, as well as the latest research topics and hotspots of interdisciplinary innovation. Drawing examples from real-world engineering cases, the speaker also discussed the recent research progress in the physical mechanism and the applications of big data analysis in tunneling carried out by her research group at UM.
Prof Zhou joined UM in 2009 after obtaining a PhD degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2008. She has undertaken multiple projects with scientific research grants provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, and the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao. She has also published more than 100 papers in SCI-indexed interdisciplinary journals in geotechnical engineering and civil engineering. In 2020, she was named a recipient of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Youth Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau).
